As part of 7th grade world history, students explored the Middle Ages in Europe. The students met the California State Standards through a number of interesting methods. To better understand feudal society, students drew their lot in life; they became royalty, members of the royal court, knights, merchants, and peasants. The only way to escape their lot in life was to join a religious order. Beyond the textbook and classroom resources, the students used the Internet and the library to discover what their life would have been like in the Middle Ages. They then constructed buildings and put together a medieval feast; they wore clothing and made food from this time period. Students also used their creativity to examine the Crusades and the role of the Church in the Middle Ages. In order to better understand the scarcity of books, students tried their hand at illuminations. Creating coats of arms allowed the students to explore their heritage and the development and meaning behind these items. Learning the geography of modern Europe allowed students to better understand the regions of medieval Europe.
